Vita

Christina Glanz

Christina Glanz was born in 1946 in the Eichsfeld/Thuringia, a rural area in the center of Germany where she spent her early childhood. When she was 11 years old she moved with her parents to the outskirts of Berlin and experienced the exciting cultural life of Berlin. After she graduated from highschool she studied architecture in Dresden and in Berlin-Weissensee. She then started working at the state department for urban design, where she was concerned with the development of the district Marzan of Berlin. She stopped this work in favour of a research assistantship in architecture and photography at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weissensee. She was accepted at the Association of Visual Artists (Verband Bildender Künstler) of the GDR and has since been working as a freelancing photographer.
Her photographs go ‘against the grain’- as in her pictures that show the feelings of protestors at state-imposed events. After the reunification of Germany, she started a long-term project in which she documented specific aspects of the abolition of the steel- and coal industries at the Niederlausitz, specifically in Lauchhammer. During this time she discovered colour-photography for herself.
Her photographs invite the viewer to take a second glance at portraits and at objects created by humans, which evokes an empathetic understanding. Her latest major project was a photographical interpretion of life in the Swedish province of Småland, resulting in the exhibition “Auf der bewaldeten Klippe” (“On the tree covered cliff”, 2015), which explores the more irrational, folkloristic context, that embeds the local export-oriented industry.
